PRESS RELEASE: The Magstim Company Ltd acquires Seren Medical Ltd

Welsh based medical device distributor Seren Medical Ltd becomes part of the Magstim Company Limited.

Whitland, Wales, UK, 23rd May 2013: Magstim, an innovative & award winning Wales-based medical device manufacturer, has acquired Seren Medical Ltd a Cardiganshire (Wales, UK) based medical device distributor.

As of April 24th 2013 The Magstim Company Ltd was successful in acquiring Seren Medical Ltd, a privately owned medical device distributor based in Cardigan, West Wales. Founded in 2003, Seren Medical, owned by Dr Catherine Davies and Mr Robin Davies specialised in the sale of equipment in the neuro-imaging, stimulation and monitoring environments.

By joining The Magstim Company Ltd, Seren Medical will transfer its exclusive distribution rights for Neurosurgical Navigation and Imaging; Pre-surgical mapping products of Sonowand and ANT Visor respectively. After a record breaking turnover for 2012/13, The Magstim Company will look to significantly increase sales with the acquisition of Seren and its product range.

Magstim is renowned in its field as the manufacturer of the most widely-used TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Stimulator in the world. These stimulators are used by neuroscience researchers to investigate the connectivity of the brain, with results that have implications for the diagnosis and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, Central Motor Disorders, Motor Neurone Disease and Spinal Injury. Magstim is also responsible for the Neurosign range of intra-operative monitors and accessories, which are routinely used by ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgeons to protect vital facial nerves during complex surgery.

Job Vacancy: Scientist

Position Description: The company manufactures medical stimulators and monitoring instruments that incorporate a range of diverse technologies, whose operation depends on harnessing the laws of physics. The successful candidate will become a key member of the engineering team by introducing a fundamental understanding of the physical principles of operation into the design of the company’s products. He/she will also ensure that all engineering activities are in carried out in conformance with company's quality system.

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferably candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in physics or a related discipline (eg: medical physics, materials science). Candidates without a bachelor’s degree qualification will only be considered if they can provide clear evidence of a robust knowledge and understanding of physical principles and can demonstrate a track record of achievement in the field.

Experience:

At least 5 years of relevant post-graduate experience, either within an industrial or an academic environment.

Essential Skills:

  • Sound understanding of physics, particularly in the field of electromagnetism

  • Understanding of the properties of different materials, including biocompatibility

  • Literate in basic PC based tools (MS Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Ability to write clear, concise and unambiguous technical documents (specifications, test reports, etc.)

Desirable Skills:

  • Simulation tools (stress, thermal, etc.)

  • Basic understanding of human physiology

  • Understanding of formal risk management techniques

  • FMEA or other formal methods of assessing device failure

Personal Characterists:

The successful candidate will be engaged with the latter aspects of the products, throughout all the stages in their life-cycle; from design and development through to pre-production and ongoing product sustaining. He/she will also ensure that all engineering activities are in carried out in conformance with company's quality system.

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferably, candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in software or electronics engineering, mathematics or another related discipline (not IT or computer science). Candidates without a bachelor’s degree qualification will also be considered if they can provide clear evidence of a robust knowledge and understanding of embedded software design and can demonstrate a track record of achievement in the field.

Experience:

At least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in the development of medical, technical or scientific instrumentation products.

Essential Skills:

  • Structured software design, preferably in compliance with IEC 62304

  • Familiarity with embedded operating systems (eg: proprietary RTOS’s, Linux, CE, etc.)

  • Fluent in ‘C’, C++, C#

  • Experience with third party GUI tools

  • Algorithm development

  • Literate in basic PC based tools (MS Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Ability to write clear, concise and unambiguous technical documents (specifications, test reports, etc.)

Desirable Skills:

  • A basic understanding of electronic hardware

Richard Whittington has been appointed as Chairman of the Magstim Board. Richard is a chartered accountant and recently retired from KPMG as a senior partner where he was Partner-in-Charge of the Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare audit group and simultaneously Global Head of Building and Construction, based in London. He worked with many clients over the years ranging from listed international businesses to smaller owner managed entities and in four different KPMG offices, including Hong Kong.

Dr Daniel Roach joins the Magstim Board as a Non Executive Director. In 1993, Daniel joined Advanced Technology Management Limited (ATM), which helped form and seed nine companies, seven of which are listed on Stock Exchanges - Acambis, Chiroscience, CeNeS, Core, Lidco, Oxford Biomedica and Salix. He co-founded Peptide Therapeutics (now Acambis) in 1993, CeNeS in 1996, Amura in 1997. He is currently an investment director of Avlar.

Robin Davies joined Magstim on 2nd April 2012 with 28 years experience in the Medical Device sector, and he plans to build upon this success.
