Magstim TMS Compatible EEG

25 Mar 2008

Magstim TMS compatible EEG allows users to monitor and record brain activity during Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), making it possible to study the effects of TMS-induced cortical excitability and connectivity with high temporal resolution. In addition, the electroencephalograph (EEG) is also compatible with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

This advance in EEG techniques involving TMS allows for a mapping of neural connections in a living human brain, a prospect hitherto thought impractical if not impossible.

Magstim’s system complements the existing capabilities of the Magstim TMS range of products and together with the Brainsight image guided positioning system can be used to facilitate further detailed studies of internal cortical connections. The full potential of this is yet to be realised, but already TMS used with appropriate EEG is being cited as a new way of detecting the impact of illness and treatment upon brain connectivity as well as being a new approach in itself of exploring the biological workings of the human mind.
