Central Motor Conduction Time (CMCT)

One of the uses of MEPs is as a measure of central motor conduction time (CMCT) - a useful method by which to monitor the motor pathway. CMCT is calculated by determining the difference between the latency of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and peripheral conduction time (Samil et al. 1998). TMS is an effective and non-invasive method by which to elicit a MEP and, by choosing particular muscles, e.g. the abductor digiti minimi, it is possible to measure CMCT to C5, C6, C7 or C8 etc.

CMCT can be used to assess the condition of patients with various motoneuron disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, Freidreich’s ataxia and compressive thoracic myelopathy and development in children.
