The Brains Behind TMS

Our pioneering work in TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) in the 80’s underpins the rapid development of this technology worldwide. Over the past quarter of a century, our equipment has been used in the vast majority of all studies carried out in the field1.
1982
Mike Polson, Anthony Barker and Ian Freeston, a research team at Sheffield University in the UK, designed a magnetic stimulator to non-invasively stimulate peripheral nerves.
(M. Polson, A.T. Barker & I.L. Freeston. 1982).
1985
Barker, Jalinous and Freeston continued this work, proving the viability of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as a method for testing brain - behaviour relationships.

Three years later, TMS made its breakthrough publication in the Lancet (A.T. Barker, R. Jalinous and I.L. Freeston, (1, 1106, 1985).
1990
This pioneering work, carried out at Sheffield University, was taken up commercially by Novametrix Medical Systems Inc.

In 1990 Novametrix evolved into the newly formed company, Magstim. Many of the original team have been involved with Magstim throughout the years and some remain at the heart of Magstim to this day.
