Assessing the Life of Your Sensor Nets
One method of assessing the performance of your sensor nets is available in Net Station in the Tools Menu: “Net Diagnostics” (pages 60-69 in the Net Station User Manual). These tests measure the RMSs, DC offsets, and impedances of a GSN submerged for at least 5 minutes in a bucket of electrolyte.
Another important factor to consider is the structural integrity of your sensor net by visual inspection. Are there any elastomer breaks? How is the elasticity of the structure, does it expand and contract smoothly when placed on a subject? Any electrodes showing fragile or brittle condition? How is the connector? Any bent pins or corrosion (green or white deposits near the pins)? Evidence of staining on the wire sleeves?
These questions will be asked ahead of return of any sensor nets for service, so it’s a good idea to have the information pulled together for each sensor net along with the serial number from the net connector. If you have any questions please contact us.
Purchasing New Sensor Nets
In addition to the standard Hydrocel Geodesic Sensor Net, we now offer “tall” versions of our sensor nets that allow you to include more people and hair types in your studies and achieve lower impedance and better data quality. A 2024 paper in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience discusses the benefits of this new sensor net version.
You can view our webinar launching this sensor net here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv9OCHrHHGY and learn more about strategies for including more people and hair types in your research.
We recently discontinued the low-profile Microcel Sensor Net after determining that our MR Conditional saline or gel Hydrocel Net provides better performance. The Hydrocel Net is compatible with more hair types, quicker to apply and remove, and allows for faster EEG recovery times after TMS pulses.
We are generally able to deliver sensor nets in 2-4 weeks depending on the specific build you are ordering. If you would like to receive a quote for new sensor nets, let us know the following:
• Channel count (32,64, 128 or 256)
• Saline / routine -or- gel / long term monitoring (LTM)
• Size in cm – see our new combined sizing chart on the following page
• Do you use EGI GeoScan / NDI Krios camera to digitize sensor positions? If so, we will use the required niccolite labels, if not, we will use non-reflective electrode labels
• Whether you want the electrodes below the eyes included (standard on pediatric and adult nets) or prefer them removed
• Do you plan to use in MRI or MEG environments or with TMS?
• Do you want extended warranties to cover the second and third years of use – this tends to be less expensive than out of warranty repairs
We know this is a challenging time in terms of funding for research, but we are here to support you in any way we can! If you need troubleshooting assistance, training, or support (remote or in-person), please contact us.
